A 40-year-old Cuban lost his life due to the severe injuries he sustained during a knife fight that took place on Monday night at a bar in Valencia, Spain, according to police reports.

The victim was identified by Valencian news outlets as José L. G. and was of Spanish nationality. He died at the scene of the violent altercation, the Hostal Restaurante Virginia, a venue located on a road that crosses the municipality of Favara.

Three other men were injured in the incident. Two of them were still at a medical center on Wednesday, under police custody. A third person involved in the altercation, after being treated at a hospital, was detained at the offices of the Civil Guard.

The three are awaiting a decision on whether they will be arrested or released, with or without charges, following the fatal confrontation, as specified by the local newspaper Las Provincias.

The events that had a tragic outcome occurred shortly after 10:30 PM on Monday, and involved two Spaniards, a father and son aged 71 and 32, a Cuban, and a 37-year-old Bulgarian citizen.

According to preliminary reports released by the media, a father and son entered the bar-restaurant seeking refuge because they were allegedly being chased by a third party who intended to kill them. They were seated at a table in the establishment when the other two men burst in, triggering a brawl.

The Cuban-Spanish man, described as having a strong build, took his son to a corner of the bar and began to assault him. According to witnesses, the father pulled out a knife to defend his son and allegedly stabbed the victim.

However, another version of events indicates that the assailant first struck the father with an expandable rubber baton, and it was the son who attempted to protect his parent and repelled the assault using a large knife, with which he dealt fatal wounds to the Cuban.

The bar owner tried to mediate in the brawl with a box of beer bottles and ended up with a minor injury to his hand.

At 10:40 p.m., the Emergency Information and Coordination Center (CICU) received an alert about injured individuals in Favara, and immediately dispatched two units from SAMU to the scene. The medical teams attended to the injured.

The 32-year-old man, who was seriously injured, suffered an abdominal trauma, while his father had a cranioencephalic injury; both were taken to a local hospital.

The Bulgarian national fled in the BMW that he and the victim had used to get to the location, but was immediately apprehended.

Machista violence, the motive behind the murder of the Cuban in Valencia

The Civil Guard is investigating the events. According to an update published this Wednesday by Las Provincias, the authorities are considering several options as motives for the fight.

One of them pertains to the claim of a debt, while the other indicates that the Cuban went to the bar to confront one of the men over incidents of gender-based violence against a woman in his family.

According to the initial investigations by the Judicial Police Team of the Civil Guard of Almussafes, cited by the Valencian newspaper Levante, the origin of the murder is a case of gender-based violence.

Family members of the victim stated that José L. G. had demanded that his alleged murderer, identified as Ramón R. R., 32 years old, stop threatening a cousin of his with whom he had a brief relationship over a year ago.

"From that moment on, the threats started to be directed at him. That's why they called on Monday and agreed to meet to discuss and resolve things. But they didn't want that; they wanted to kill him. It has been a setup! They went after him!" said a relative of the deceased.

Authorities confirmed that the Cuban and his companion traveled in a BMW from Gandia, where they reside, to Favara, after arranging to meet with the alleged killer by phone.

Upon arriving at the bar, they encountered the man and his father, after which a violent fight broke out that resulted in the death of the Cuban citizen.

José L. G. left a nine-year-old child orphaned, his relatives stated.
