A Cuban living abroad shared a video on TikTok where she expresses her frustration over the misunderstanding she perceives from some Cubans who remain on the Island regarding life outside of Cuba.
The video, which has sparked numerous reactions on social media, offers a critical perspective on the expectations and emotional burden that many emigrants feel from those they left behind.
"Sometimes it really bothers me, and it's about the Cubans who are in Cuba," begins the user identified as @iday2023. "If they get sick, they have to let you know, but they don't think about the fact that the one who is here also gets sick, that they don't have five euros to take a bus, that they pay rent and pay for gas."
In her testimony, the Cuban emphasizes that those who emigrate also face economic and emotional difficulties, although they often do not share this in order not to worry their families back on the Island. “The Cuban who is here doesn't call those back there to tell them what is happening or that they don't have money,” she expressed.
He also criticized the mistaken perception of abundance and comfort associated with life abroad. “If I post a picture at a beach, they think we are millionaires and that I have money,” he noted, referring to the criticism he has received from acquaintances and friends in Cuba.
Although he clarified that his words were not directed at his immediate family, he did acknowledge having conflicts with friends and acquaintances for this very reason. “The one over there thinks that you are obligated to support him… so that you come here, getting up at noon, trying to live off the Cuban who is here," he concluded.
The video has sparked a debate on social media regarding the economic and emotional burdens that many Cuban emigrants often face, as well as the need for empathy and mutual understanding between those living inside and outside the country.
