The Fidel Castro Ruz Center showcased a video on Wednesday featuring the addition of a Mercedes Benz 500 to its exhibition, which, according to the institution, was used by the dictator for more than two decades.

The arrival of the vehicle on May 15 was broadcast on social media by official outlets such as Cubadebate and celebrated with videos, including segments from the documentary Comandante by Oliver Stone, which shows Fidel Castro driving through the city of Havana in the luxurious car.

The vehicle, produced by the prestigious German firm Mercedes-Benz, stands out for its high-level performance, commonly associated with the comfort of political or business elites.

In a country where a large part of the population relies on bicycles, horse-drawn carts, or overcrowded state buses, the luxury vehicle associated with the leader of a "revolution for the humble" has sparked harsh criticism both domestically and internationally.

A few years ago, there was also controversy following the appearance on social media of Sandro Castro, grandson of Fidel Castro, boasting about high-end cars and personal privileges.

In one of the most viral videos, he was seen driving a Mercedes Benz, which he referred to as his "little toy," while boasting: "We are simple, but every now and then we need to bring out these little toys we have at home."

The Mercedes Benz 500 on display is much more than a museum piece. For many, it represents the vast gap between the revolutionary rhetoric of austerity and the lifestyle reserved for the ruling elite and their families.

While thousands of Cubans face blackouts, inflation, and precarious living conditions, the regime chooses to emphasize symbols that fuel the personality cult narrative surrounding Fidel Castro.

Frequently asked questions about Fidel Castro's Mercedes Benz and the controversy in Cuba

Why does the exhibition of Fidel Castro's Mercedes Benz generate controversy?

The exhibition of Fidel Castro's Mercedes Benz generates controversy because it symbolizes the hypocrisy of the Cuban regime. Despite the rhetoric of a "revolution for the humble," Fidel Castro's use of a luxury car and the ostentation of his family, such as his grandson Sandro Castro, contrasts sharply with the hardships faced by the majority of the Cuban population. This discrepancy between the official discourse and reality fuels criticism of the Cuban government.

What does Sandro Castro symbolize for Cubans?

Sandro Castro symbolizes the disconnection and privileges of the Cuban elite. His ostentatious lifestyle and constant provocations on social media are seen as a mockery of the Cuban people, who are facing a deep economic crisis. Sandro has become an icon of the contrast between the privileges of the ruling elite and the living conditions of the majority of Cubans.

How does Sandro Castro's attitude affect the perception of the Cuban regime?

Sandro Castro's attitude reinforces the negative perception of the Cuban regime. His actions and statements, which showcase a life of luxury and privilege, contrast sharply with the reality of shortages faced by the majority of the population, highlighting the inequality in the country. This fuels social discontent and criticism towards a government that promotes an image of equality and austerity that does not align with the reality of its elite.
