A 75-year-old woman was struck on the head with a frying pan by a young man while walking to her son's house in a condominium in the city of Sunrise, in Broward County.
The attack occurred last Tuesday, when the victim was heading to celebrate their birthday with family.
The attacker also injured the woman's son when he tried to defend her.
A celebration that ended in tragedy
According to her daughter, Fiorella López, her mother had spent the morning with her and was then walking to her other son’s house, where they planned to continue the celebration of her 75th birthday.
He had parked his car at the entrance of the condominium and, unaware of the danger, began to walk towards the house.
"She comes walking alone and then my sister, who is waiting for her at the entrance, realizes that there is a person two houses down, behaving strangely, and starts signaling to my mom, who is coming over, innocently," Lopez recounted in statements to Telemundo 51.
Without understanding the warning signs, the lady continued on her way. It was then that a neighbor identified as Carlos Hurtado Florez, 26 years old and of Colombian origin, approached her.
“He grabbed her by the dress and even though my family was shouting: 'let her go, let her go,' he hit her on the head with a frying pan,” added the daughter.
Multiple attack and moments of terror
The victim's son tried to intervene to protect his mother but was also attacked.
“At that moment, my brother arrived, and he attacked my brother as well. He also broke his head,” said López.
The police confirmed that both suffered injuries: the elderly woman ended up with bruises on her face and leg, while her son sustained a serious head injury.
According to the mentioned source, the assailant first hit his own brother in their shared home, then went outside and vandalized his brother's car, and subsequently attacked the elderly woman.
The repercussions of the attack are not only physical. The entire family is profoundly affected.
"My mom has several bruises on her face and leg. My brother got his head split open. And what we all have, the rest of us, is psychological damage. Emotional damage. We are all terrified," said the complainant to Telemundo 51.
He also emphasized that his mother suffers from hypertension and anxiety, which has worsened after the assault.
The family fears for their safety as long as Florez continues to live nearby.
"This could have been worse than it already was, and this is what we fear," argued Fiorella López.
"As long as those people live next to my brother, we are afraid... we do not feel safe," he concluded
The Sunrise police confirmed that they arrested Carlos Hurtado Florez and opened an investigation.
The alleged reasons for the young man's aggressive behavior have not been disclosed.
