A Cuban resident in Miami-Dade is facing charges of aggravated child abuse after allegedly violently beating his three children, aged two, five, and eight, one of whom suffered a “traumatic brain injury,” according to authorities.

The Miami-Dade County Police Department identified Brice Martínez as the man who was arrested after assaulting his children and barricading himself in his apartment, in a condominium located at Southwest 20 Street and SW 122nd Avenue, in the Tamiami area, on Saturday afternoon. According to the arrest report, Martínez is Cuban and is 33 years old.

Agents from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) responded to that address following a report of domestic violence.

According to the arrest report, Martínez was watching his three children when he allegedly became upset with his five-year-old and slammed his head against the wall three times, causing the child an injury that required five staples and a frontal bruise, reported the local press.

The man later attacked the two-year-old, throwing him against the concrete floor and hitting his back. When the eight-year-old tried to defend his siblings, his father got angry and struck him with a closed fist in the face, causing a contusion, the Police reported.

Rescue teams transported the child with more serious injuries to the Kendall Regional Hospital for treatment, where he was in stable condition; while the other two were examined by paramedics at the scene and later handed over to their mother under custody.

Once the five-year-old boy was taken to the hospital, Martínez barricaded himself in the apartment and refused to come out.

After a robust police deployment and about three hours of negotiation, officers from the MDSO Special Response Team (SRT) stormed into the building, the man exited the residence and surrendered to the authorities.

Martínez faces child abuse charges. During his court appearance this Sunday, Judge Mindy Glazer denied him bail. He remains in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) in Miami and is scheduled to return to court on Monday.
