Wife of Cuban detained by ICE at Krome Center in Miami: “He hasn't been able to shower.”

Laura Yanet García, the wife of a Cuban detained by ICE at the Krome center in Miami-Dade, reported on the poor conditions of the facility.

“They have not been able to bathe, sleep under proper conditions, or receive medication. There are elderly people, diabetics, and hypertensive individuals without medical care,” the woman stated to Telemundo 51.

García, whose heartbreaking testimony went viral on social media last week, requests that her husband Yordanis López Portal, 27 years old, be given the opportunity to defend his case so that he can see his daughter again.

"She is saying her first words now, but ‘dad’ was the first one she always said. Every time he came home from work in the afternoon, when he would open that door or I felt him outside, I would say, 'Dad is home,' and she would say, 'Dad' and look towards the door. Now, every time someone knocks at the door, she looks, thinking it's her dad," she recounted through tears.

López Portal "arrived in March 2023, was given an I220-A without parole, was released on parole (...) He is our only support. This has shattered us (...) Our daughter looks for him every day. We just ask that they listen to him so he can defend his case," García stated to the television channel.

This Cuban woman claims that her husband left his job after refusing to cooperate in the repression of July 11, 2021, in Cuba, which is why she fears returning to the island.

"Share your story, let’s make this more viral."

Resident in Jacksonville, García provided a heartbreaking testimony about the detention of her husband last Tuesday by ICE agents in the city of Orlando during the first immigration court since he arrived in the United States.

García urged those going through a similar situation to share their stories on social media to come together as a community and be heard.

“I urge you to please tell your story. Let’s make this more viral than it already is; let’s fight for our rights. It’s not about finding a culprit, it’s about coming together as the Latino community that we are, who came fleeing from what we had back there,” she said in a statement on TikTok.

"We came here to work, to grow, to create a future for our children and for ourselves. What they are doing to us is an injustice. I urge you to share your story," he added.

In May, Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz visited that facility and reported that there were between 25 and 35 men in a very cramped space.

Next Monday, Congressman Carlos Giménez will visit Krome to investigate these allegations regarding the treatment of migrants. After the visit, he will share his impressions in a press conference.
