The German Embassy in Cuba announced this Tuesday a transfer of 300,000 dollars to the World Food Programme (WFP), destined for the Cuban population.
The funds would be directed towards emergency response for disasters caused by natural catastrophes such as hurricanes, emphasized the note published on social media.
"This way, people will be able to receive quick and safe assistance in the event of natural disasters, such as hurricanes," stated the German diplomatic mission.
The contribution is part of external financing avenues that the Cuban regime receives through international agencies, in this case through the WFP, a humanitarian organization of the United Nations that maintains a presence on the island and develops food assistance programs in vulnerable sectors.
This type of collaboration adds to a long list of financial support managed by countries and multilateral entities, which at times has been channeled directly to the Cuban state apparatus.
The operation of the WFP in Cuba has been crucial during times of humanitarian crises or natural disasters, although it is not without criticism from voices that condemn the lack of independent oversight regarding its implementation within the country's political and economic context.
In the 2021-2025 cooperation cycle, the WFP implemented projects to support Food and Nutrition Security in Cuba valued at 57.9 million dollars.
"With these funds, rice, grains, and oil have been purchased for the benefit of the most vulnerable people and aimed at responding to food emergencies in the country," reported the Communication area of this United Nations institution to the Cuban News Agency.
According to the information, five million dollars have been allocated to ensure "a varied and nutritious diet" for primary school children in the eastern provinces, through the project "Support for sustainable school feeding based on strengthening local food production systems in Cuba."
However, these efforts remain limited to "selected municipalities," without widespread impact or assurance of real sustainability.
On the other hand, 32% of the 57.9 million dollars were contributed by the Federation of Russia, through the Ministry for Civil Protection, Emergencies, and Disaster Relief (EMERCOM)
With Russian funds, 844 metric tons of vegetable oil have been acquired this year, of which 656 tons have already arrived in the country.
On June 18, 470 tons were delivered, during a ceremonial event that included Cuban officials and the Russian ambassador.
