Owner of medical clinic in Miami arrested for million-dollar fraud

According to the police report, the arrest is part of a broader investigation into a criminal network involved in staging automobile accidents

An undercover operation culminated on Tuesday with the arrest of Alex Borrero, 62 years old, owner of Clínica Médica H. Miami, in a case that unveiled a complex web of insurance fraud in the city.

The arrest took place following a raid coordinated by the Miami police and FBI agents at the establishment located at the intersection of West Flagler Street and Southwest 40th Avenue in the Flagami area.

According to the police report -cited by the local press- the arrest is part of a broader investigation into a criminal network dedicated to staging car accidents to bill insurance companies for non-existent medical treatments.

The objective of the operation, according to an undercover agent, was "to curb the insurance fraud that is occurring in the city of Miami," a crime that causes millions in losses for the healthcare system and the insurance market.

Authorities detailed that Borrero allegedly operated a scheme in which reports of vehicle accidents were falsified, and then false medical claims for injuries were submitted at his clinic.

These treatments were not only not carried out, but in many cases, the patients involved did not have any real injuries.

"The victim, which is the insurance company, noticed that there was a small group of people involved in multiple accidents, and that they always received some sort of medical assistance afterward," explained Miami Police Chief Manny Morales.

The operation: Undercover agents and federal collaboration

During the raid, several agents were seen interviewing a woman inside a patrol car, although it has not been confirmed whether she will face charges.

The operational deployment included the presence of federal agents, who assisted the local police in executing the arrest warrant and gathering evidence at the clinic.

When approached by the media, Borrero -whose country of origin has not been revealed- limited his statement in Spanish to "it was just an investigation", without providing further details or denying the allegations.

More arrests: A growing case

This arrest is not the only one connected to the case.

In June, two individuals identified as Rodylaidi Martínez (30 years old) and Greter Aguirre Guerra (24) were also arrested in connection with the same fraudulent scheme.

It is presumed that both were part of the network that facilitated the creation of false medical records and the filing of claims with insurance companies.

The police have not ruled out additional arrests, as the investigation is still ongoing.

“We are tracking the money and analyzing all transactions related to these claims,” added a police source who requested anonymity due to the ongoing operation.

An endemic problem in Miami

The insurance fraud, particularly that related to simulated automobile accidents, has been a constant concern in South Florida for years.

Cases like that of the Medical Clinic H. Miami highlight the gaps in the system that can be exploited by organized networks for illegal profit.

With this operation, the authorities aim to send a clear message: combating fraud is a priority.

"These crimes affect everyone: they increase insurance premiums and damage the integrity of the medical system," concluded Manny Morales.

Investigations are ongoing, and Borrero is expected to face multiple charges, including organized fraud, document forgery, and insurance fraud, crimes that could result in significant prison sentences if he is found guilty.
