A 36-year-old pediatrician identified as Neha Gupta was arrested in Oklahoma, accused of murdering her four-year-old daughter, whose body was found in the pool of a house in Miami in the early hours of June 27.

According to the authorities, Gupta attempted to stage an accidental drowning, but the autopsy revealed signs of asphyxiation that contradict his account of events.

A getaway to Miami without parental consent

Neha Gupta, a licensed physician in Oklahoma for six years and a former employee of the Oklahoma Children's Hospital, traveled with her daughter Aria Talathi from Oklahoma City to Miami on June 25.

Both stayed in a vacation rental from Airbnb in El Portal, to the north of the city limits.

According to the arrest warrant, neither her ex-husband – the pediatrician Dr. Saurabh Talathi – nor anyone else was aware of the trip.

The security cameras and Airbnb records confirmed that mother and daughter were the only occupants of the property during their stay.

The facts

Gupta stated that on June 26, they spent the day together at the beach and on jet skis.

She said that Aria appeared exhausted upon returning and that later she woke her up for dinner around 9 p.m. They shared the bed and, according to the mother's testimony, they fell asleep together.

In subsequent statements to the police, Gupta claimed he heard a noise around 3:20 a.m. He reported seeing the sliding door open and found his daughter submerged in the pool.

He added that he tried to rescue her for about ten minutes before calling 911.

When emergency teams arrived at the residence located at 156 NW 90th Street, they found the child in the deep end of the pool.

They performed resuscitation maneuvers and transferred her to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she was declared dead at approximately 4:30 a.m., according to local news reports.

The autopsy rules out drowning

Although Gupta voluntarily appeared before the authorities with his lawyer to present his side of the story, the investigators' suspicions intensified following the results of the autopsy.

The forensic examination conducted by Dr. Tuyet Tran revealed that Aria did not die from drowning.

No traces of water were found in his lungs or in his stomach.

Instead, cuts were found inside the mouth and bruises on the cheeks, signs consistent with suffocation rather than attempts at resuscitation.

“The victim died before being placed in the pool”, states the forensic report cited by Univision.

It was also noted that Aria's stomach was empty, which contradicts Gupta's account that the girl had dined hours earlier.

The investigators concluded that Gupta -Aria's sole caregiver at the time- caused her daughter's death and attempted to cover it up by staging an accident.

According to the court documents cited by CBS Miami, “the individual attempted to conceal the murder [...] by faking an accidental drowning in the pool of a rented property.”

Ongoing detention and extradition

Gupta returned to Oklahoma shortly after the incident. However, on July 3, she was arrested in Oklahoma City thanks to the collaboration between the local Police Homicide Unit, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Department (MDSO).

She is currently detained and awaiting extradition to Florida, where she will face charges of first-degree murder.

“We are waiting for the facts to be clarified. [...] We are eager to understand why the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office seemingly felt so confident in arresting and charging a grieving mother when everything else suggests a simple tragic accident,” said Richard L. Cooper, the mother's attorney, in statements collected by Local 10 News.

A deep-rooted family dispute

Gupta's family context reveals a prolonged and complex conflict.

Since 2022, she had been embroiled in a legal dispute over the custody of Aria with her ex-husband.

Although the divorce was finalized in 2024, Gupta did not succeed in obtaining sole custody of his daughter.

As part of the process, she had obtained a temporary restraining order against Talathi for alleged domestic violence, but it was dismissed due to lack of evidence.

Additionally, a judge ordered Gupta to pay Talathi over $79,000 in legal fees, and recently his lawyers had requested the seizure of his assets, as reported by Miami Herald.

During this period, the pediatrician also lost her job.

OU Health and the University of Oklahoma reported that “Dr. Neha Gupta has been suspended from patient care, she was notified of her termination, and she has not been attending to patients in the health system since May 30, 2025,” according to CBS Miami.

So far, the authorities have not confirmed a clear reason for the alleged crime.

The investigation remains ongoing, pending toxicology reports and the formalization of charges in Florida.

What seems clear is that the gathered evidence— including surveillance recordings, the autopsy, and the mother’s statement—was enough for prosecutors to deem that "the death by drowning was orchestrated."
