The Cuban actor residing in Colombia Jorge Cao broke his silence about one of the deepest sorrows that has marked his life, the death of his daughter Maricel Luz, which occurred in Cuba just over a month ago, without him being able to be by her side or attend her funeral.

“It’s an irreparable pain”, Cao confessed during an interview on the program Lo sé todo, where he shared how the distance forced by the circumstances in the country has prevented him from saying goodbye not only to his daughter but also to other close relatives who have passed away on the Island in recent years, reported El Tiempo.

Cao, 81 years old, expressed that the death of his daughter came at a time when he could not travel or pause his work commitments, making the farewell an impossible act. “I couldn’t be there for her at the end. I mourned from here and I am still doing so. It’s something I still can’t talk about,” he stated.

Despite having always been reserved about his private life, this time he decided to share his pain and frustration. “It's very hard. It's an irreparable pain, I can say that and I can share it with you all,” he declared.

Her daughter, Maricel Luz, was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer that ultimately led to her passing on the island. “It was very difficult because everything happened in a month, from the discovery of her health condition to her farewell. It was very hard for me,” she stated.

His testimony has touched the hearts of many Cubans who, like him, have experienced the tragedy of losing a loved one without the chance to say goodbye—an experience common among those who have had to emigrate and bear the burdens of forced distance imposed by years of separation, economic obstacles, or political restrictions.

The actor, remembered for his roles in telenovelas such as Pasión de Gavilanes and La Ley del Corazón, has not set foot in Cuba for 15 years. In the interview, he admitted that he no longer believes he will ever return.

“Almost all of my family is no longer in this world, my last loss was my daughter”, he explained, adding that his connection to the Island has been fading over time and with the absence of his loved ones. Although he once dreamed of walking the streets of Havana again, today he asserts that his home is in Colombia.

I am part of this country, of this story, and I intend to develop my career for another 30 years in Colombia,” he expressed gratefully, highlighting that he feels fully integrated into Colombian life.

The words of Jorge Cao resonate strongly among thousands of Cubans who have had to grieve from afar, who have wept in silence without being able to embrace their loved ones or accompany them in their final moments. His testimony gives a face to the human drama experienced by the Cuban diaspora, marked by nostalgia, helplessness, and the pain that distance brings.
