A mother has sought the help of citizens to find the driver who ran her and her son over this Sunday in Playa, Havana, who did not provide them with the appropriate assistance and gave false information to evade responsibility for the accident, as reported.
Around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Celia Valdez and her 10-year-old son were hit by a motorcycle while riding their bike at the traffic light at 7th and 10th, in the municipality of Havana. Both suffered injuries and their moped was damaged.
Valdez reported in a Facebook post that the young man, who was riding a red motorcycle "similar to a Suzuki but with a larger tank," collided with them and fled the scene. In response to her shouting, he returned "nervously" to the site of the accident, took her phone number, and gave her his, but it was fake.
"He told me his name was Ernesto Enrique and that his number was 56803358, which I called and is fake," he revealed.
"My bicycle was damaged and my child was injured, as was I," he explained. "I filed a report, but in my desperation, I couldn't get the license plate. Only one man helped us, no one else, and it was quite busy; everything has been lost. There I was, lying in the street, with my 10-year-old son."
Valdez requested help in finding the motorist, whom he described as “white-skinned, tall, with curly, medium-length hair.” He added that he was wearing a black racing motorcycle helmet and that due to the collision, his vehicle lost its right mirror.
The young man stated that he was studying at university, his parents live abroad, and he resides with his grandmother.
“Someone must have seen something, there were quite a few people (…) Please, any information will help, he has to face it,” she pleaded. People can contact her directly through her messenger.
While official statistics indicate that traffic accidents have decreased in 2025 compared to the previous year, these incidents remain very frequent and the number of fatalities has increased, particularly among pedestrians and drivers and passengers of vulnerable vehicles such as bicitaxis, motorcycles, and mopeds, whose use has risen in Cuba in recent years.
The National Road Safety Commission recently reported that from January to May, there were 3,035 accidents, resulting in 2,670 injuries and 290 fatalities.
