Three Cuban men managed to escape this Tuesday from a “safe house” in Cancún, Mexico, where they were being held captive, and sought assistance from the National Guard, according to reports from local news outlets.
Around 6:50 a.m., the three Cuban immigrants arrived at the National Guard base located on Chac Mool Avenue in superblock 220 and sought help from the military after fleeing the home where their alleged captors were holding them against their will.
According to reports, there were seven other individuals also deprived of their liberty in the house, the newspaper Por Esto! stated, identifying the Cubans by their first names: Jordani, Aniel, and Rolando.
According to the testimony collected by that media outlet, the men reportedly jumped from the second floor of the house to escape, and ran to the military facility in search of help.
In photos published by various news portals, it can be seen that they are without shoes.
Preliminary reports indicated that the National Guard personnel immediately activated the victim assistance protocol and provided shelter to the three Cubans, while a surveillance and protection operation was carried out in the area of the base. The incident was reported to state and federal authorities.
According to Por Esto!, the authorities went to the address provided by the men; however, they have still not confirmed whether more people were rescued from the safe house.
The three Cubans received first aid and were reported to be stable and out of danger. They were placed in the custody of the National Migration Institute (INM).
The investigation of the case is being handled by the Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo, which must clarify the context of the alleged kidnapping and whether the events are linked to human trafficking, extortion, or another crime, and identify those responsible.
More information about the events is expected to emerge throughout this Tuesday.
The increasing migration of Cubans to Mexico in recent years has forced them to face high-risk circumstances, as organized crime groups take advantage of foreign immigrants in vulnerable situations.
Relatives of Cuban migrants have reported kidnappings and ransom demands for their release. While some remain missing, their families are pleading for help to find their whereabouts.
