The Cuban Yarisleidis Cirilo triumphed this Sunday with the gold medal in the C1 200 meters event at the Junior and Under-23 World Championship of Sprint Canoeing, held in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal.
Cirilo, bronze medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, dominated the competition with an authoritative performance, clocking in at 47.26 seconds, being the sole competitor able to finish under 48 seconds in the final, according to JIT.
The Spanish Viktoriia Yarchevska (48.08) and the Russian, competing under a neutral flag, Ekaterina Shliapnikova (48.47), filled out the podium.
An impeccable performance
The regatta was of a high level, but the Cuban had already demonstrated her excellent physical condition in the qualifiers, where she recorded a time of 45.88 seconds, one of the most remarkable of the tournament.
Cirilo was the only representative from Cuba in this championship, competing solely in the Under-23 category in the C1 200 meters event. Her victory reaffirms her status as one of the most promising figures in world canoeing, with an eye on new challenges in the senior category.
The young Caribbean athlete is already registered for two events at the World Championship in Milan 2025, which will take place from August 20 to 24. Following this triumph, Cirilo will spend three weeks in Portugal with his coach Nelson Perales and the team's physiotherapist, before traveling to Italy to continue his preparation.
