The Cuban @yaneisycanta_98, known on TikTok for her singing videos and sharing scenes from her daily life, has firmly responded to the criticism she received after posting a video where she spoke about the "luxury that cannot even be found in Paris." The clip, which went viral quickly, showed the young woman enjoying a snack with her son in a park in her hometown, in eastern Cuba.

Far from showcasing material luxuries, the young woman spoke of a moment of peace and family connection: a cold soda, some snacks, and her son's laughter under the shade of a tree. However, for many users—especially Cubans living abroad—this message was interpreted as a way to gloss over the harsh reality experienced on the Island.

Amidst the avalanche of negative comments, Yaneisy released a second video in which she defended her right to share her reality without being judged. “I live in Cuba, and for some of my compatriots who are abroad, providing a meal for my child is considered being a freeloader,” she stated firmly. “I can't go out for a soda without feeling guilty because others can’t do it, as if the guilt were mine,” she added.

The creator rejected the accusation that she is “romanticizing misery” and recalled that what she showcases is her everyday life. “I can't show what I do in my village because they say I romanticize a communist Cuba, when all I'm showing is my reality,” she stated. She also denounced the classism that those who manage to enjoy even the bare minimum from within Cuba often face.

"If I get my nails done or wear a nice piece of clothing, I’m no longer an everyday Cuban," she said, emphasizing that the hardships she faces do not disappear just because she looks good or smiles for a moment. The young woman also questioned why some people outside the island choose to harshly criticize those who manage to get ahead instead of being happy for them.

Despite the defensive tone, Yaneisy did not express resentment towards the Cubans who have emigrated. On the contrary, she devoted a message of respect to them: “I, who am here, sincerely rejoice for every Cuban who has left, because that is also being Cuban,” she concluded.

The initial video was interpreted by many as a poetic way of resisting, of finding beauty in the little things. But its subsequent response makes one thing clear: showing a moment of happiness in Cuba does not equate to denying the crisis. It is simply their way of surviving it.
