The President of the United States, Donald Trump, ordered this Friday the deployment of two nuclear submarines near the "strategic regions" associated with Russia, in direct response to the recent statements made by former Russian President Dmitri Medvédev, the current Vice Chairman of the Kremlin's Security Council.

"In response to the provocative statements made by former Russian President Dmitri Medvédev […] I have ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to the corresponding regions, in case these reckless and incendiary statements turn out to be more than just words," Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social.

The U.S. leader warned that "words are very important and can have unforeseen consequences," and emphasized that he hopes this "will not be one of those cases."

However, the message does not specify the particular areas that Trump refers to as "corresponding regions," where the American submarines would be located.

Trump's reaction comes after Medvédev harshly criticized the ultimatum that the White House imposed on Russia to end the war in Ukraine, stating that it could trigger a direct confrontation between the two countries.

"Trump is playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10... He should remember that Russia is neither Israel nor Iran. Every new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country," Medvédev wrote on his official X account (formerly Twitter).

Sources within the administration indicated that Trump, increasingly frustrated with President Vladimir Putin's stance, has reportedly shortened the deadline for Russia to agree to an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine to 10 days, under threat of unspecified consequences.

In another message published this Friday, the U.S. president revealed that nearly 20,000 Russian soldiers have died just in July, and that the total number of Russian casualties so far in 2025 exceeds 112,000.

It also indicated that Ukraine has lost about 8,000 soldiers since January, not including those missing.

"Too many unnecessary deaths! This is a war that should never have happened," Trump wrote, while once again blaming his predecessor Joe Biden for the situation: "I'm just here to see if I can stop it!"

The deployment of nuclear submarines marks a new peak of tension in relations between Washington and Moscow, in a context where the war in Ukraine has intensified and diplomacy appears to be stalled.

Analysts point out that the presence of U.S. strategic weaponry near the Russian perimeter serves as a direct deterrent message but also poses a risk of unpredictable escalation if the parties do not resume dialogue in the coming days.
