In the heart of Las Tunas, right in front of the iconic Vicente García Park, the San Jerónimo Parish is preparing to embark on an ambitious restoration process that promises to restore its splendor and strengthen its role as a spiritual and heritage symbol of this Cuban city.
At the conclusion of the Eucharistic celebration of the Third Sunday of Easter, Father Pedro Pablo Ladrón de Guevara Cruz, the parish priest of the church, announced the upcoming start of restoration works, according to what was published on the social media platform Facebook.
The building, over a century old, will undergo a complex restoration process due to its location and the variety of materials used in its construction and subsequent reconstructions from the 17th century to the present day.
The intervention will not be limited to the temple. The project also includes the restoration of the Vicente García Central Park itself, an action that will be overseen by government authorities and will involve the perimeter closure of both spaces during the construction work.
During the announcement, several conceptual images were presented to the community, giving a glimpse of how the temple and park will look once the construction is completed. The designs are the work of architect Domingo Antonio Alás Rosell and were shared by priest Ángel Andrés González Guillén.
"We entrust to God and the Virgin Mary, under the invocation of Our Lady of Charity of Copper, the development of these constructive actions, and we ask the faithful people of God to accompany these efforts of the Church with their prayers," expressed Father Pedro Pablo, who urged the community to stay united in this process of patrimonial and spiritual renewal.
The reconstruction project, led by Emprestur S.A. from Las Tunas, will be carried out in several phases over the coming months, according to the Iglesia Cubana website.
"The first phase has begun with the installation of the perimeter fencing for the protection of the work, followed by the consolidation of the structure, including the repair of cracks and fissures, among other actions. Later on, it will proceed with the restoration of the facade, carpentry, and the restoration of decorative elements that have been affected by pollution and the passage of time," added the mentioned information space.
