A new act of violence, the third in three months, was recorded against the San Pedro Apóstol Organized Mission in Santiago de Cuba, and once again it occurred with complete impunity.
The report was made by priest Rodhin Alonso Colomar, who informed this Wednesday on his Facebook profile that the temple, located in Reparto Flores, was attacked in the early morning with stones that broke windows, shifted the frame of a window, and caused damage to a side wall of the building.
"They threw stones again with complete impunity," wrote the priest, who explained that the aggression occurred right in the area where free purified water is provided to the neighbors.
The incident adds to what happened just a few hours earlier, on the night of July 26, when, while the regime celebrated the so-called anniversary of the Day of National Rebellion, the Mission of San Pedro Apóstol was once again targeted by vandalism.
On that second occasion, they broke the glass of doors and windows and destroyed the sign announcing the Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
The first reported aggression by the parish priest occurred last April, when a group threw stones at the church after 1:00 a.m., breaking glass and damaging a window. One of the stones, he stated at the time, could have injured the sacristan.
In the comments, the priest was blunt in denouncing institutional passivity: “Did you see any resolution? Neither did we,” he wrote, highlighting the authorities’ lack of response.
"While we serve and show love and help to everyone, this is how they repay us. The Church is not to blame for the evils we are all experiencing. The attack of evil will not destroy the Church," wrote Colomar, who concluded his message with a blessing to the community.
The three consecutive attacks and the institutional silence highlight the growing insecurity faced by community and religious spaces in Cuba, even as these play a fundamental role in addressing the state’s lack of social assistance and protection.
