Fidel Suárez Cruz, a former Cuban political prisoner sentenced to 20 years in prison, thanked U.S. authorities for the arrest of Jorge Luis Vega García, alias “Veguita”, one of the most feared repressors of the Cuban penitentiary system.

“This is much bigger than people can imagine. It has brought tears to many to know that this oppressor is detained and that justice is beginning to be served,” declared Suárez Cruz in an interview with journalist Mario J. Pentón.

"We cannot allow that in the cradle of freedom there are repressors of the Cuban people," said Suárez Cruz.

Former Cuban political prisoners assert that they endured brutal beatings during their incarceration, abuses that have left them scarred for life, which they directly attribute to the leadership of Vega García in the prisons of Agüica and Canaleta, in Matanzas.

The arrest of the former lieutenant colonel of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) took place on Tuesday, August 5, as confirmed by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The journalistic investigation by Pentón, based on testimonies from former political prisoners, was key in bringing the case to light and aiding the authorities' actions.

Vega García legally entered the United States on January 20, 2024, at Tampa International Airport, accompanied by his wife and son, under the humanitarian parole program. He later requested to be granted asylum under the Cuban Adjustment Act, despite his repressive history.

Identified by victims as a violent official, Vega managed the Agüica and Canaleta prisons for years, where systematic beatings, physical and psychological torture were carried out, and medical services were denied as a form of punishment, according to documentation from the platform Cuban Repressors – Stop the Violence!.

Official documents and testimonies from former officials, such as Lainersy Ávila Castro, confirmed his identity and his promotion prior to retiring from MININT, refuting any attempts to distance him from the Cuban repressive apparatus.

Blas Giraldo Reyes, another of his victims who was sentenced to 25 years during the Black Spring, also celebrated the arrest. “It is a disrespect that this man is here. The Cuban exile community is very pleased that ICE has apprehended him,” he said in another interview with Pentón.

The case was also reported in the political arena. The Cuban-American congressman Carlos Giménez requested the deportation of Vega with evidence of his connections to human rights violations.

Exile organizations insist that the detention must mark the beginning of a serious judicial process and not simply result in a deportation. Authorities have not yet revealed the specific charges for which Vega García was arrested.
