A serious criminal incident tarnished the National Futsal Championship when the members of the Pinar del Río team were victims of a violent robbery at the Mulgoba sports motel, owned by INDER in the Cuban capital.
According to reported by Lorenzo Martínez Gener, who was the head coach of the Provincial Futsal Team, the players lost their mobile phones during the early morning, allegedly stolen by an individual who, according to initial reports, would work at the center itself.
Lorenzo Martínez reported that the athletes were sleeping in the facility when the thief entered the room and took the devices.
The athletes, who were in Havana to compete in the National Futsal Championship, spent a large part of the day at the headquarters of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) to give statements about the incident.
Despite the difficult moment, the team took the field and achieved victory in their match, although they could not share the joy with their families due to the loss of their means of communication.
The incident was described as “unprecedented and unprofessional” by the expert, who criticized the absence of representatives from the Cuban Football Association (AFC) and provincial authorities during the process.
"If this happens at a sports event sanctioned by the governing body of the sport in a country and its sports federation, what can we expect for the people," he expressed.
He pointed out that this type of incident calls into question security at official events and impacts the elite of national sports.
So far, the AFC has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Those affected are hoping to recover their phones, emphasizing that, in the current Cuban context, losing a cell phone represents a significant loss.
