The governor Ron DeSantis announced that state senator Jay Collins will be the new lieutenant governor of Florida, filling a vacancy that has remained open since February.

The announcement was made during a press conference in Tampa, where DeSantis highlighted Collins' military and legislative record, as well as his commitment to conservative values.

Collins, 47, is a former Green Beret of the Army with 23 years of service, a combat veteran, and an advocate for gun ownership.

In the state Senate, where he took office in 2022, he has promoted measures to expand access to firearms, roll back regulations enacted after the Parkland massacre in 2018, and lower the minimum age to purchase a gun in the state back to 18.

"Jay, a warrior wounded in combat who served for 23 years as a Green Beret, embodies the spirit of Florida," DeSantis said on X.

"He has approved more than 40 bills and has been a strong advocate for veterans, military families, educational freedom, law and order, and responsible fiscal management. Jay is an unwavering champion of conservative values. I look forward to working with him to continue putting Florida first," he added.

The new lieutenant governor, born in Montana, has publicly shared the personal challenges he has overcome, including a period during high school when he was homeless.

Despite losing a leg in service, he continued for five more years in the Special Forces before retiring and dedicating himself to humanitarian efforts and disaster rescue work. He currently leads a nonprofit organization.

The appointment is viewed by analysts as a strategic move by DeSantis, who cannot run for reelection in 2026 and is looking to solidify his legacy.

Collins could emerge as a potential candidate to succeed him, which would open a new chapter in the indirect rivalry between DeSantis and President Donald Trump, who has already endorsed Congressman Byron Donalds for the position.

In Florida, the position of lieutenant governor is mostly ceremonial and only takes on executive functions if the governor is unable to serve.

However, Collins' appointment strengthens the political alliance between them and sends a clear signal of DeSantis' priorities for the state's political future.
