A traffic accident that occurred on Wednesday on the Calzada de Santo Suárez, in the Diez de Octubre municipality of Havana, left not only a motorcyclist injured after being hit by a trailer, but also a scene of social outrage: a man took advantage of the emergency to steal the victim's belongings instead of helping her.

According to social media posts, the incident occurred around 4:00 PM and caused a great deal of shock among neighbors and passersby.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been revealed, suffered an injury to the foot, although witnesses confirmed that he is stable, contradicting initial reports that suggested a death at the scene.

Looting amidst tragedy

The user Ofun Meyi Tanke Cuba reported on Facebook that a man, who was apparently present at the scene of the incident, posed as a relative of the motorist and, under that guise, stole documents and personal belongings from the victim.

Among the stolen items are his identity card, driver's license, and other important papers.

"It is very shameful that, instead of trying to save a life, someone dedicates themselves to taking others' belongings. What a lack of decency we live in these times, what a lack of empathy, please let us be more human," wrote the complainant, visibly outraged by what had happened.

A roadway marked by tragedy

Residents of the area recalled that 10 de Octubre Boulevard is one of the most dangerous roads in the capital.

"Those who avoid that road are avoiding death or injury to their bodies," commented the internet user Damián Montejo, referring to the high number of accidents reported in that area.

A concerning trend

What happened in Santo Suárez is not an isolated incident.

In Bayamo, at the beginning of the month, several individuals stole belongings from victims of an accident that left multiple injured, while others were busy filming the tragedy with their cell phones.

In April 2024, in Santiago de Cuba, a woman injured in a motorcycle accident was robbed of money and documents by someone pretending to help her.

That same year, in Old Havana, the cellphone of a deceased person and the money of an injured driver were stolen in a traffic accident.

These episodes highlight an ethical rift that goes beyond the economic crisis.

Amid scarcity and social wear, behaviors are multiplying that reflect a deep erosion of solidarity.

The instinctive response, in some cases, is not to help the fallen, but to take advantage of their vulnerability.

Misery and dehumanization

The robbery of an injured motorcyclist in Havana illustrates what many call human misery in times of crisis.

It's not just about the lack of material resources, but rather the loss of essential values: empathy, solidarity, and respect for life.

Although the authorities have taken action in other cases, with arrests and judicial processes, the harshest condemnation comes from the citizens, who refuse to normalize indifference and looting in the midst of adversity.

Each theft from an accident victim serves as a reminder that the reconstruction Cuba needs is not only economic but also moral and social.
