A woman was the victim of a brutal stabbing attack this Monday in Reparto Agüero, in Santiago de Cuba, at the hands of her partner.

The information was initially confirmed by journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who reported the incident on his social media.

According to Mayeta, the victim worked at Primary School #8 in Nuevo Vista Alegre, although he did not specify their name or other details.

Despite the limited official information, several individuals identified as neighbors, acquaintances, and family members intervened in the comments to confirm that the woman survived the attack and is alive, although her health status has not been disclosed.

"I know her, wishing her a speedy recovery"; "Speedy recovery for my neighbor," commented two women, which reinforces the account that the victim did not die following the attack.

Other people commented that an ambulance arrived quickly at the scene, which could have been crucial in saving his life.

Shock in the community: “She was a good woman, she didn’t deserve this.”

The incident of gender-based violence—of which little is known—has sparked a wave of outrage among the people of Santiago, who denounce the rising tide of masculine violence and the inaction of the authorities.

“She was a good woman, she didn’t deserve it”, wrote a user, clearly affected by the news.

One comment stated that the attacker would be named "Adonis" and that he lives near the location of the attack, although this information has not been confirmed.

In the comments, dozens of people demanded harsher laws against aggressors: “Please, let them finally implement very strict laws for femicides,” urged the same user; to which others responded with skepticism about the effectiveness of Cuban justice in these cases.

"The laws are only strong against those who protest against the government, but not against those who murder women," commented a user, referring to the apparent legal helplessness faced by victims, particularly in the context of gender-based violence.

Unrestrained violence in Santiago de Cuba

This new episode of gender-based violence adds to a troubling sequence of violent events in Santiago de Cuba in recent days, the most horrific of which was the discovery of a dismembered corpse, with the head first found in the trash and later remains in an apartment.

Citizens report that attacks, robberies, and homicides occur every day, and many are beginning to express fear even about leaving their homes or taking their children to school.

“Santiago is terrifying,” “This won't let up,” and “We're going to have to make a news report for Mayeta” were some of the most commonly repeated comments. For weeks, various voices have warned about the lack of state response to the increase in feminicides, attempted murders, and other violent crimes in the eastern region of the country.

Call to action

As of now, there is no official information regarding the identity of the attacker, the exact clinical condition of the victim, or whether legal action has been taken in this matter.

The community continues to wait for the authorities to respond or for state media to address the case, although past experiences in Cuba suggest that such news is often silenced.

Numerous users have called for justice, protection for women, and stricter criminal laws in response to these crimes.

In a country where there is no comprehensive law against gender-based violence and no updated official statistics on femicides, citizen reports and independent journalism have become the only means to highlight these issues.
