Five Cubans accused of murdering a man to rob him in the U.S.

Five Cuban citizens are facing capital murder charges after being accused of participating in the homicide of a man during a robbery attempt on August 3 in northeast Austin, Texas, according to the local police department.

The victim was identified as Miguel Mondragón, 49 years old, who died after being shot while trying to escape from an armed ambush.

According to the investigation, Mondragón and several companions were traveling in a truck when they were blocked by two vehicles.

The suspects - all Cubans according to journalist Mario J Pentón - descended hooded and armed, opening fire on the car.

Mondragón tried to escape on foot, but was caught by the attackers. After shooting him, they stole his personal belongings, including money, a cellphone, and a watch. His companions managed to escape in the vehicle.

The accused were identified as Alejandro Hurtado-Reyes, 22 years old; Yanaris Reyes, 29 years old; Antonio González, 17 years old; Yurisander Góngora Rojas, 19 years old; and Héctor Yohany Achang Batlle, 19 years old.

All were arrested between August 12 and 19 in various locations in Texas by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, led by the U.S. Marshals.

Relatives of the victim have reported that the accused were part of an organization dedicated to robbing Hispanics in the Austin and Pflugerville area, taking advantage of many immigrants' fear of reporting out of concern for their immigration status.

They also expressed concern over the low bails granted to some of the accused, which they consider a risk to the community.
