The young Cuban doctor Miguel Varela González, only 25 years old, lost his life in a tragic traffic accident that occurred on the night of Friday, August 29, at kilometer 120 of the Habana-Pinar highway.
According to the broadcaster Radio Guamá, the incident occurred when the driver of a trailer belonging to the state company Transcupet Pinar del Río lost control of the vehicle.
The impact resulted in one fatality and two injuries. The deceased was Varela, who was traveling in the crashed vehicle.
The news has caused deep shock in Pinar del Río and on social media, where family members, colleagues, and friends remember the young doctor as a boy full of dreams and plans.
Varela was a doctor and a member of the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) in Pinar del Río, within the Audiovisuals and Promotion section. Additionally, he was a leader of the University Student Federation, a member of the Union of Young Communists, and of the Communist Party, as highlighted by several publications that emphasize his political work.
The AHS of Pinar del Río expressed its sorrow in a statement in which it extended condolences to the family and friends.
The national president of the AHS, Yasel Toledo Garnache, publicly expressed his sorrow over the passing and described the news as "a blow to the very core."
Close friends have also shared heartbreaking messages on social media. “Life took you away from us too soon and in a too cruel way,” wrote one of his companions, who remembered him as a brother and highlighted the dreams and goals he still had to achieve.
Shared photographs show Miguel surrounded by colleagues, friends, and loved ones, reflecting a young life cut short in the midst of personal and professional projects.
The accident that claimed Varela's life brings to the forefront the issue of high accident rates on Cuban roads, where deficiencies in the technical condition of vehicles and road infrastructure combine with driver fatigue and a lack of effective preventive measures.
