The Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel thanked Vietnam for its support and solidarity towards the island following a significant donation, during his official visit to the Asian country to commemorate the 80th anniversary of its independence.

“Thank you, Vietnam, for your attentiveness and care, for your sensitivity towards the problems of Cuba, and for your expressed willingness to extend and deepen cooperation in essential areas for the Cuban people,” Díaz-Canel wrote on his account on X, after participating in the commemorative events.

During his stay, the Cuban leader met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, with whom he discussed the progress of economic ties and reiterated his commitment to enhancing investment and exchanges with Vietnamese entrepreneurs.

The visit was highlighted by the symbolic delivery of a donation of 15 million dollars, raised by over two million Vietnamese citizens in the campaign “65 Years of Friendship Vietnam-Cuba,” as reported by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez.

The gesture of solidarity occurs as Cuba faces one of the most severe crises in its recent history, with a sharp shortage of food, medicine, and fuel, as well as widespread blackouts.

This is compounded by the loss of credibility of the regime following allegations of corruption and million-dollar accounts held by its military, while international aid provides no visible benefits to the population.

So far, the authorities have not specified how the funds will be allocated or what mechanisms will ensure their use for the direct benefit of the population.

In addition to the donation, both governments signed agreements to promote rice production on the island between 2025 and 2027, in a context where the country is facing serious difficulties in ensuring the supply of basic goods.

Despite the symbolism of the alliance, the visit reflects the growing tensions between Cuba and some of its strategic allies, who in recent months have demanded structural reforms and greater transparency in the management of foreign investments.
