The Cuban entrepreneur and content creator Lisbania Hernández, known on Instagram as @uruguayosmiami, has sparked interest on social media with a Cuban recipe that you probably haven't tried in a while.
Hernández showed in a video how he enjoys an authentic “Uruguayan steak” in Miami. In the clip, he features a large, crispy product that, he says with laughter, he will share with his husband.
"But we're not going to give him half, just the smallest piece," he said. While he accompanies it with rice and beans, she prefers it plain and without utensils. "I like to eat it in bites," she says playfully.
The name of this dish suggests a foreign origin, but Uruguayan steak is part of Cuban culinary tradition. It is a recipe that evokes family memories, and many grandmothers would prepare it at home as a special meal on Sundays.
Some associate it with recipes like milanesa, San Jacobo, or the gigantic Asturian cachopo, but in Cuba, it has its own identity and does not taste the same as the other dishes mentioned.
The Uruguayan steak can be made with beef or pork. The preparation starts with large fillets, which are tenderized and seasoned with salt and pepper.
Then they are filled with a slice of cooked ham and another slice of a cheese that melts well, folded, and breaded by dipping them in beaten egg and then in breadcrumbs or crushed crackers. Finally, they are fried in hot fat until golden brown on both sides.
The result is a dish that is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and full of flavor, which continues to win over Cuban palates… now in Miami, because it’s nearly impossible to gather the ingredients to make them on the island.
