The Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla spoke this Saturday at the UN General Assembly to denounce - before an almost empty audience - what he described as an "unjustified military escalation" by the United States in the Caribbean Sea, and stated that this presence represents a "threat of war" in the region.
Rodríguez pointed out that the U.S. naval and air deployment, which includes test ballistic missiles and nuclear submarines, would be using the fight against drug trafficking as a pretext, an argument that the Cuban foreign minister dismissed as a "legend that no one in this room believes in", as reported by the official portal Cubadebate.
In the Caribbean Sea, the threat of war looms today with an absolutely unjustified offensive deployment. The U.S. is using the pretext of fighting crime and drug trafficking, stated the head of Cuban diplomacy.
The intervention of the chancellor took place in a context of limited diplomatic attention, with a semi-empty auditorium in the main hall of the United Nations, which contrasts with previous speeches by leaders of greater geopolitical significance.
Rodríguez took the opportunity to reiterate his support for the regime of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela and condemned the sanctions imposed by Washington against Caracas.
We reaffirm our full support for the Bolivarian and Chavista Government of that sister Latin American and Caribbean nation,” he affirmed.
He also accused the United States of creating a dangerous situation with the interception of vessels and the alleged violation of international law.
We reject the Monroe Doctrine and any attempt at militarization, intervention, or imperialist domination in Latin America and the Caribbean,” he added.
Finally, Rodríguez Parrilla called for the construction of a "new international order" based on respect for sovereignty and equity among nations, although his message had limited international impact.
