The arrival of October keeps Cuban meteorologists on alert due to the high risk of tropical cyclone formation in the region.

Although the peak of the hurricane season typically occurs in September, the tenth month of the year also poses a serious threat to Cuba.

From the Provincial Meteorological Center of Ciego de Ávila, specialist R. Galardy warned this Wednesday in a post on social media that October is historically one of the most dangerous months for the island, particularly for the western Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

He emphasized that water temperatures remain high, creating favorable conditions for the formation and strengthening of tropical systems.

According to the specialist, during this month, the most common paths of cyclones shift to areas closer to Cuban territory, significantly increasing the threat to the country.

In particular, the province of Ciego de Ávila has been affected by 13 cyclonic events in the month of October, including depressions, tropical storms, and Category 1 hurricanes on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

The meteorologist recommended that the population stay informed through the official channels of the Cuban meteorological service, review family plans for hurricanes, and secure their homes.

He recalled that history, with examples like last year's Hurricane Oscar, shows that preparedness remains crucial for protecting human lives and minimizing damage.

Previously, the Cuban meteorologist Christian Jesús Muñiz Carrillo warned in September that the hurricane season was entering its most active phase, as that month has historically been when the peak formation of hurricanes in the Atlantic occurs.

According to a post, between 1950 and 2023, nine hurricanes made landfall in Cuba during the month of September.

So far, Cuba has only felt the effects of a tropical wave in 2025 that later developed into tropical storm Imelda and subsequently into a hurricane.

The rest of the systems have formed in other regions or have headed north across the Atlantic, posing no direct threat to the island.

So far in the 2025 hurricane season, nine named storms have been recorded in the Atlantic basin, four of which reached hurricane status.

Currently, the Atlantic hurricane season has added a new element of attention with the simultaneous presence of Imelda and Humberto, two systems progressing in open waters that could come close enough to trigger the rare Fujiwhara Effect.
