A court in Spain sentenced a Cuban citizen to three years and one month in prison, after he pleaded guilty to silencing a businessman and stealing 83,000 euros at machete point in his residence in the town of Magaluf, on the island of Mallorca.

The accused, whose name has not been disclosed, admitted to being the author of the crimes of robbery with intimidation, illegal detention, and assault, during the trial held this Monday at the Provincial Court of Palma, reported local media.

He will also have to pay a fine for five months, with a daily fee of seven euros, and will be expelled from Spain once he serves his sentence and is released from prison.

On the night of December 19, 2019, the Cuban and an accomplice who has not yet been identified, both masked, ambushed the victim on a staircase in their home after disabling the alarm system.

When the businessman entered the house, they gagged him and tied his hands and feet with duct tape; they threatened him with death, using a machete, and struck him numerous times on the head to make him reveal where he kept the money.

The assailants took a backpack in which the businessman had stored 83,000 euros that he had recently received from the transfer of ownership of a establishment; as well as his mobile phone and the keys to his home.

Upon learning of the theft, the Civil Guard of Calvià initiated an investigation, which concluded in January of this year when the agents managed to locate one of the suspects in the United States, according to press reports.

The Cuban lived between the cities of New York and Miami, and has numerous criminal records. The DNA samples obtained by the police in Mallorca made his arrest in the U.S. possible.

The sentence for the defendant was pronounced following an agreement reached between his defense attorney, the victim's lawyer, and the representative of the Public Prosecutor's Office. The Prosecutor's Office considered the compensation for damages—since the defendant deposited 60,000 euros in indemnity before the oral hearing—as a highly qualified mitigating circumstance.
