The collision occurred in a high-traffic area, especially during the early hours of the day, when workers and students head toward the city center. According to residents, the stretch where the accident happened is considered dangerous due to its narrowness, poor lighting, and lack of adequate road signs.

Local residents recalled that just a few meters from the site are the notorious potholes on the Carretera Central, a spot where the uneven surfaces and poor condition of the pavement pose a constant danger to drivers.

"On the Central Highway, just a few meters after the San Francisco polyclinic, it's impossible to get through due to the huge holes in the road. God forbid an accident happens," commented a user in La Tijera's post.

"There was a tremendous noise at that hour of the night. Thank God there were no fatalities. Gentlemen, this area is like a wolf's mouth every night because the street lights are not on. When there are power outages, it gets even darker. What a danger! It's a place where the Carretera Central runs, and where cars from the 8 Vías come and go," another person pointed out.

So far, the authorities from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) have not issued an official statement regarding the causes of the incident, although initial reports suggest a possible failed maneuver during the intersection of both vehicles. The collision is believed to have caused the container to become unbalanced, ultimately tipping partially off the road.

The accident adds to a series of recent incidents involving trailers and heavy trucks in various provinces of Cuba, highlighting the structural issues of freight transport on the island. Factors such as the deterioration of roadways, the aging vehicle fleet, and a lack of technical maintenance increase the risk of such occurrences.

In March, a cargo truck overturned in Sancti Spíritus without causing any injuries, while in February another truck got stuck under a bridge in Santiago de Cuba due to a miscalculation regarding the height of the container, a situation that occurs with alarming frequency on the Island's roads.

In January, a similar vehicle overturned on a bridge in Havana, and days earlier a truck loaded with chicken had an accident in Guanabacoa. Overturns were also reported in Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila, and Holguín, including one in Loma de Rejondones that resulted in the death of two people.

These incidents, primarily documented by witnesses and social media groups, reflect the persistence of structural issues in heavy cargo transportation and the lack of road maintenance, which turn Cuban roads into recurring scenes of accidents.

During 2025, traffic accidents in Cuba have claimed dozens of lives and caused hundreds of injuries. According to official data, more than 60% of incidents involve human error, while the remainder is attributed to poor road conditions or mechanical failures.

Despite the material damage, the incident did not completely disrupt traffic in the area, although delays were reported as tow trucks removed the wrecked vehicle.
