A truck hits a motorcycle on the Vía Blanca

A traffic accident occurred on Saturday on the Vía Blanca, near the exit of Barrio Obrero, when a truck collided with a motorbike.

The incident was reported on social media by the user Yeilier Cabrera, who shared a video in the group Facebook "ACCIDENTS BUSES & TRUCKS for more experience and fewer victims!".

The recording shows the enormous truck in a position that suggests it was trying to make a turn. In front of it, lying in the middle of the road, was a fallen motorcycle. A police patrol was present at the scene.

Cabrera wrote in his post: "Right now on Vía Blanca and the exit from Barrio Obrero, a truck collided with a motorcycle. The condition of the passengers is unknown."

So far, no official details have been provided regarding the number of injuries or the severity of the wounds.

Possible causes of the collision

Users speculated in the post about the possible causes of the incident.

Some pointed out that the motorcycle driver may have attempted to overtake on the right just as the trailer was beginning to turn, a risky but common maneuver, as they described.

"Maybe the motorcycle tried to get ahead when the truck was turning right, I've seen it happen many times," one of the comments said. Another added, "It seems like it tried to pass on the right when the truck was making the turn (which is very common among motorcyclists, who are always in a hurry)."

Several critiqued the behavior of many motorcyclists on the road: "They are always weaving in and out, trying to overtake; at traffic lights they all want to be in front for no reason... but well, a lot of people drive without knowing how."

There were also those who pointed out shared responsibilities: "In this case, the driver should not have turned right, but the trailer truck must first complete the turn before opening up to avoid anyone cutting in from the right."

Motorcycle accidents in the spotlight

Motorcycles and mopeds are among the vehicles most involved in traffic accidents in Cuba.

Last Thursday, a collision of two motorcycles on Infanta Street, in Central Havana, resulted in one fatality and several serious injuries, following the crash involving two motorcycles and a car that was trying to avoid a pothole.

Witnesses reported the "irresponsibility of the car driver" as the trigger for the accident.

On September 12, an accident in the Boca de Miel community, in Baracoa, resulted in the death of a 58-year-old cardiologist from Guantánamo.

Although he initially survived the impact, he passed away days later at the local hospital due to the aftermath of the incident.

The recurrence of these incidents confirms the vulnerability of motorcyclists on Cuban roads and the need to strengthen preventive measures, both in personal driving and in traffic control and the condition of road infrastructure.

A recurring problem on Cuban roads

Road accidents continue to be one of the most serious problems in Cuba. According to data from the National Road Safety Commission, as of May 2025, there had been 3,035 reported accidents, resulting in 2,670 injuries and 290 fatalities.

The main causes include violations of traffic rules, the consumption of alcoholic beverages, and fatigue among professional drivers.

This is compounded by structural deficiencies: poorly maintained roads, inadequate signaling, and a deteriorating vehicle fleet with many vehicles exceeding four decades of use.
