Passenger buses, a looming danger on Cuban roads
Traffic accidents continue to be one of the leading causes of death and injuries in Cuba. In recent months, various provinces in the country have been the scene of several serious incidents.
In April 2025, three people were injured in a mass accident in the municipality of Río Cauto, also in Granma, when a truck carrying dozens of passengers overturned after losing control on a poorly maintained road.
In January, a mass accident in eastern Cuba resulted in several fatalities and dozens of injuries when a truck transporting passengers plunged into a ravine.
In June 2024, a truck adapted for passenger transportation was involved in a dramatic accident in the municipality of Songo-La Maya, Santiago de Cuba, when the vehicle completely overturned on the road.
The recurrence of such incidents highlights the deterioration of communication routes, the poor technical condition of vehicles, and the lack of oversight in alternative passenger transportation, a widespread practice throughout the country due to the scarcity of state-owned buses.
