A 20-year-old young man, identified as "Damián Ulises," was seriously injured after being stabbed on Tuesday afternoon in Santiago de Cuba.

The incident occurred specifically in the neighborhood Altamira, in the area known as "the Hoyo de Panché."

Witnesses of the attack claim that the victim sustained a deep stab wound to the abdomen, which even caused part of his intestines to be exposed, as revealed on Facebook by journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.

Neighbors and passersby quickly came to his aid, transporting him to a hospital facility in Santiago de Cuba, where he remains hospitalized with a reserved prognosis.

"At this time, the causes of the attack are unknown, as is the identity of the assailant, although authorities have reportedly already begun the necessary investigations," the communicator noted in an initial post.

In a more recent post, Mayeta Labrada indicated that the young man was still hospitalized following a complex surgery performed at the Joaquín Castillo Duany Military Hospital.

According to reports from close family members, the stab wounds affected the colon, the lungs, and other parts of the body.

The young man underwent emergency surgery and, depending on his recovery, he may be moved to the Intensive Care Unit.

His father, Ulises, who is with him in the hospital, stated to the aforementioned journalist: "Mayeta, I myself don’t even know what happened,” he said, visibly affected.

When asked about any possible issues or conflicts involving his son, the father briefly responded, "I'm ready for anything," hinting that he was aware of the difficulties the young man faced.

According to reports gathered in the area, the attack reportedly occurred after an argument over a debt, and the assailant allegedly stabbed him after he refused to pay it.

Neighbors claim that Damián is not an easy young man and that he has several prior incidents and conflicts, although he has never faced any formal sanctions for those alleged actions.

The case has generated significant tension in the Altamira neighborhood where, according to the cited source, "violent incidents appear to be multiplying without any effective response."

Mayeta Labrada indicated that local authorities would be investigating the case. However, official media outlets have not yet commented on the incident.

The identity of the assailant has also not been disclosed, and it is unknown whether any official arrests have been made.

Mixed reactions

The case has generated an intense wave of comments on social media, where some condemn the attack while others point directly to the previous behavior of the young man who was assaulted.

"I'm amazed to see how people defend without knowing. He has an angelic face but is a terrible thief and con artist," wrote an internet user.

According to reports from the community, the incident reportedly occurred following a dispute over a debt. Damián allegedly refused to return a sum of money to the aggressor and even threatened him with a knife.

The attacker left the scene, but a few minutes later, he encountered the young man again, who reportedly provoked him once more, and that’s when the aggression occurred.

In contrast, family members, friends, and close acquaintances are asking for compassion and prayer.

"Love of my life, you are healed by the blood of Christ," wrote a woman who identified herself as part of the family circle.

Others recall difficult episodes from their childhood: mental health issues, the death of their mother when they were young, and a adolescence marked by the hostile environment of the neighborhood.

A neighborhood in tension

Residents of Altamira claim that violent incidents have become frequent in the area. “In Santiago, there's no need to watch the news to know that violence is rampant: just stepping outside is enough,” warned Mayeta Labrada in one of her texts.

Comments like “This is out of control,” “It’s not even safe to fly over Santiago,” or “How much longer will this violence continue?” reflect the social exhaustion in the face of a spiral of aggression that seems relentless.

Some directly blame the authorities: "These things happen because the PNR doesn't want to work, leaving the youth adrift," wrote a user.

Others call upon education and the environment as deep-rooted causes: “The neighborhood, the music, the atmosphere… everything is rotten and the young people get lost in that.”

As of the closing of this note, there is no additional information regarding the clinical progress of the injured young man.
