Several Cuban-American congress members celebrated this Friday the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 to the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, highlighting her bravery and commitment to democracy in Latin America.
“Today I celebrate one of the most fulfilling moments of my career. María Corina Machado has won the Nobel Peace Prize, after being nominated by me and my colleagues: Marco Rubio, María Elvira Salazar, and Mario Díaz-Balart — a moment I will never forget,” wrote Congressman Carlos A. Giménez on his X account.
The representative María Elvira Salazar, for her part, described Machado as “the Simón Bolívar of our times” and highlighted his role as a symbol of struggle for the entire continent.
"Today the world pays tribute to a woman who embodies the spirit of freedom of an entire continent", she stated.
Her courage and unwavering faith in democracy inspire millions of Venezuelans, and all of us who believe in freedom, to never give up. The Nobel Peace Prize acknowledges her struggle, but the true victory will be to see Venezuela free, Salazar added.
The Nobel Committee announced this Friday that the award was granted to Machado “for her tireless work in promoting the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and her fight for a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
In the past year, the opposition leader has been forced to live in hiding due to threats against her life. Nevertheless, she has remained in Venezuela, which has been noted by the Committee as a display of courage that has inspired millions of people both inside and outside the country.
The decision has been celebrated in various political sectors in the United States, where Machado maintains the support of important figures in Congress and the Latin American exile community.
