A large rescue operation was launched on Saturday afternoon along the Malecón in Havana, near G Street, after someone fell into the tumultuous sea due to the strong waves.
According to witnesses, the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m., when at least one person was swept away by the current, prompting a response from emergency services.

In videos shared on social media by the group 'Wonderful Malecón', the arrival of a fire team, as well as an ambulance and other rapid response units can be seen.
In images captured by neighbors from nearby buildings, several young people were seen floating in the sea at a considerable distance from the Malecón wall, apparently accompanied by rescuers, while receiving instructions from their colleagues on land. A speedboat with official markings joined the operation to assist in the rescue.
"The sea was very rough. They were brave, fighting for their lives. In seconds, they were no longer visible," commented a witness in the Facebook group where the event was shared.
The firefighters acted quickly, although it is unknown how many people fell into the sea or their current health status. The authorities have not yet issued an official statement, but an update is expected in the coming hours.
The Malecón in Havana, one of the most frequented places in the city, has been the site of multiple incidents related to strong waves, especially during periods of cold fronts. This incident once again highlights the need to take extra precautions in coastal areas during adverse weather conditions.
Rescues and tragedies on the Malecon of Havana
The Malecón of Havana, one of the most iconic places in the Cuban capital, has also become a frequent scene of accidents, rescues, and tragedies, often linked to strong waves and the recklessness of bathers during adverse weather conditions.
The most recent case that shocked public opinion was that of the teenager Carlos Javier Sánchez, 16 years old, whose body was found lifeless on March 7, 2025.
According to official reports, the minor was bathing in the La Punta area when he was swept away by the sea. However, witnesses claimed that the young man was sitting on the wall and was hit by a wave while trying to retrieve a flip-flop that had fallen into the reef.
Despite the rapid mobilization of rescue teams, firefighters, Coast Guard, and medical personnel from SIUM, the operation was unable to save the minor. The conditions of the sea even forced a temporary suspension of the search due to the danger of the environment.
These types of events are not isolated. In October 2023, two young Cubans risked their lives to save two teenagers who were drowning in front of the Riviera hotel. On that occasion, the civilian rescuers acted before the firefighters, managing to pull the minors from the water amidst violent waves and dangerous reefs.
Authorities have reiterated the prohibition against swimming in the Malecón, especially in unapproved areas and during cold fronts. However, the lack of oversight and effective preventive measures, combined with misinformation or citizen negligence, continue to lead to unfortunate situations that often end in tragedy.
