Several local residents, who witnessed the event or arrived shortly afterward, confirm that the girl died on the spot, while her mother was taken in serious condition to the naval hospital.

"A girl of only 18 years old, may she rest in peace," lamented a witness. "They say she was with her mother, who is in serious condition at Naval," added another.

The young woman's body remained at the scene for hours while authorities carried out the necessary procedures.

It is noteworthy that this unfortunate event occurred in an area where, according to residents, heavy traffic is not common, which has heightened the bewilderment over how an accident of such magnitude could have happened.

So far, there is no official information regarding what happened, and there are no confirmed additional details about the exact circumstances of the incident or the current condition of the victim's mother.

Who was to blame? Found testimonies

As the news spread, several social media users began to speculate about the possible causes of the accident, leading to a controversy over the responsibility for the incident.

Some point directly at the truck driver.

“The fault lay with the truck that hit her. It ran the stop sign, she was going correctly around the roundabout, and the truck did not stop as it should have,” explained a user.

"All because the other vehicle didn't obey the traffic signals," insisted another comment, clearly outraged.

However, not everyone shares this version. Other witnesses or individuals familiar with the scene claimed that the motorcycle may have been driving incorrectly:

“The motorcycle went against the roundabout. It wasn't the truck's fault,” countered one of the internet users.

Due to the lack of official information, there is no certainty about the causes of what occurred.

There were also those who focused on the road training of drivers in general.

"One of the reasons for so many accidents—beyond the poor condition of the roads—is the lack of knowledge of traffic laws. There are many people without a license, and others who have a license but don’t even know how to drive," stated an experienced driver.

Dozens of people expressed their grief and frustration over the loss of such a young life and the conditions of traffic in the capital.

“In that country, there are four cars and three motorcycles, and there is an accident every day. I don’t understand!”, lamented a Cuban from abroad, while another warned of the need to increase precautions on the road as the end of the year approaches.

Traffic accident mortality increases in Cuba

Cuba recorded 502 deaths in traffic accidents from January to August 2025, nearly 80% of the fatalities from that cause in the entire previous year, indicating a rise in mortality due to road incidents in the country.

The National Road Safety Commission recently reported that in the first eight months of the year, there were 5,025 accidents -41 more than in the same period of 2024-, resulting in 4,516 people being injured.

Last year, traffic accidents (7,507) resulted in a toll of 634 fatalities and 6,613 injuries, numbers lower than those of 2023.

According to the latest official statistics released by the Cuban News Agency, seven out of ten incidents involved victims, primarily due to vehicle collisions, which continue to be the "most dangerous" accident, accounting for 36% of the total fatalities.

Meanwhile, every accident caused by excessive speed records at least one victim, and for every five incidents caused by this factor, one person dies.

Villa Clara, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, and Artemisa are the provinces facing the most critical situation, as accidents have increased by more than one-third compared to 2024, revealed the head of the National Traffic Director of the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández.

Meanwhile, the highest danger has been reported in Havana, Ciego de Ávila, Villa Clara, Holguín, and Santiago de Cuba, especially due to incidents involving drivers of motorcycles and mopeds, and pedestrians.

According to Rodríguez, the misconduct of drivers of those vehicles is responsible for approximately 11 accidents daily, resulting in at least seven injuries and one fatality every six days. He stated that these modes of transportation are involved in 52% of traffic incidents in the country, causing 32% of deaths and 42% of injuries.
