According to reports received by Cubalex, the prisoner had pain in a leg and was taken to the medical post of the prison, where he was diagnosed with a blood clot, but did not receive treatment. “Shortly after, he lost his life,” the organization revealed on social media.

The Marrero family, who had visited him days before his passing, assured Cubalex that he "was doing well" and is demanding answers from the authorities.

The statement indicates that, to date, no official information has been provided regarding the circumstances of Marrero's death.

Cubalex has confirmed 35 deaths of prisoners on the island during 2025.

The organization, which provides legal advice and defends human rights in Cuba, pointed out that these cases expose negligence, lack of medical attention, violence, and absence of independent investigations, as well as serving as evidence of the inhumane conditions present in the country's prisons.

He also warned about the obligation of prison authorities to ensure timely and adequate medical care for all inmates and to promptly investigate any deaths that occur within the penitentiary system.

The frequent deaths of prisoners in Cuban jails have sparked strong criticism of the regime on the island due to the inhumane conditions in prisons and the denial or delays in medical care as repressive mechanisms.

The state fails to fulfill its obligation to guarantee the basic rights of individuals deprived of liberty in Cuba, allowing systematic abuses and degrading conditions, as reported by the Cuban Prison Documentation Center (CDPC), based in Mexico.

In its monthly report for September, that institution documented 71 events that involved violations of the rights of individuals held in correctional facilities and four deaths that “reflect patterns of torture, medical negligence, and cruel punishments.”

These data constitute an underreporting of actual events and victims, due to official opacity.
