Dr. Edy Abreu Guzmán, a 58-year-old cardiologist from Guantánamo, passed away on Thursday afternoon at the Baracoa Hospital due to a traffic accident that occurred on Friday, September 12.
The news was confirmed on social media by various posts.
On Facebook, the communicator Miguel Noticias reported that the doctor was unable to overcome the aftermath of the incident and passed away in the hospital facility in Baracoa.
A cousin revealed that she was riding her motorcycle when she had an accident near the old Miel Bridge (destroyed by Hurricane Oscar last year) in the Boca de Miel community.
For her part, user Laura Werney expressed the deep sorrow caused by the physician's passing in the medical community and among all those who had the privilege of knowing his dedication, wisdom, and humanity.
"Dr. Abreu Guzmán dedicated his life to saving hearts, and today ours breaks in his absence. We stand in respect and solidarity with his family, colleagues, and friends during this time of sorrow. May they find comfort in the legacy of love and service he leaves behind," he said on Facebook.
Edy, known as El Chino among his close friends, was from Baracoa; he was married and had children.
He began his professional career as a family doctor and worked his way up to fulfill his dream of becoming a cardiologist.
