A motorist lost their life this Tuesday after colliding head-on with a horse-drawn cart in the Guanabacoa municipality of Havana.

According to reports from local residents, the motorcyclist tried to avoid a pothole in the road by moving into the opposite lane and ended up colliding with a horse-drawn cart. The impact caused an injury that killed him instantly.

Several people have warned that this road is dark and in terrible condition, which increases the potential risk of accidents in the area.

So far, no official information has been released regarding the incident. The identity of the victim is also unknown.

While witnesses to the incident stated that the cart was traveling with its lights on, the news sparked comments about horse-drawn vehicles that travel on roads in the dark, at night, and the rise in traffic accidents they have been involved in.

Although the current Road Safety Code in Cuba—Law 109—prohibits the circulation of these means of transport during the hours between dusk and dawn, the reality in the country is different.

A traffic accident that occurred last week in the locality of Santa Rita, in Granma province, had a tragic outcome: the death of a young man due to the severe injuries he sustained when the jeep he was traveling in collided with a horse-drawn cart at night.

Accidents involving motorcycles are also reported very frequently. Several reports in recent days have documented fatal motorcycle accidents in various provinces of the country.

The latest report from the National Road Safety Commission revealed that motorcycles and mopeds are involved in 52% of traffic incidents and have caused 32% of the fatalities and 42% of the injuries.

According to the same source, between January and August of this year, 502 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Cuba. This figure represents 80% of the fatalities from this cause for the entire year of 2024, indicating an increase in mortality from accidents on the roads.
