Lieutenant Colonel Asmel Rojas Águila, from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), admitted during the official program Hacemos Cuba, hosted by Humberto López, that fuel thefts on the island are concentrated within the state entities themselves.
According to the official, crimes primarily occur at night when surveillance is less strict, and those involved take advantage of the lack of oversight.
These are the three scenarios where they are most common:
- In the generators
- In the storage facilities of CUPET
- At the bus stops
Rojas Águila stated that between January and August 2025, the regime's authorities have managed to recover approximately 350,000 liters of fuel through police operations conducted in various provinces of the country.
The lieutenant colonel also noted that the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) and the Electric Union of Cuba (UNE) are conducting inspections on 100% of the country's generators, aiming to prevent the diversion and theft of fuel at these facilities, which are essential to ensure electricity generation during the blackouts experienced by the Cuban population.
For her part, Yarianna Guerra, director of the fuel marketing company, explained that the theft begins at the storage facilities, especially in large-capacity storage tanks, where the product is distributed to tanker trucks to then be delivered to end customers at gas stations.
The statements from officials confirm what many Cubans have suspected for years: the theft of fuel in Cuba is linked to networks within the state institutions themselves, amidst a backdrop of deep economic and energy crisis.
