The authorities of Sagua de Tánamo confirmed this Saturday the discovery of a deceased person's body and warned that, following the necessary procedures for identification, it will be determined whether it corresponds to either of the two individuals reported missing in recent days due to the rising waters of the river in that area.
In the official statement released on pro-government profiles, the authorities expressed their condolences to the families and stated that there will be updates as soon as confirmed information is available.
The discovery occurs amid the search for Antonio Angulo Caballero, 74 years old, resident of the El Jobo Popular Council, and Luis Pérez Rodríguez, 64, a worker at UEB Correos and neighbor of the Ciudad Sur Popular Council, who were reported missing from their homes following the river overflow.
Angulo was reported missing since October 22 and Pérez Rodríguez since October 23. The page “Bloguero Tanameño” initially reported the disappearance and the alleged drowning of both, which occurred on Wednesday during the flood.
Currently, there is no confirmation of the identity of the recovered body, so the authorities are insisting on waiting for the results of the identification processes before determining whether it is one of the two missing persons.
They emphasized that the priority is to provide accurate information to the families and the community as soon as an official report on the identity of the deceased and the circumstances that led to the incident is available.
The incident keeps the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo on alert, where flooding related to recent rains has been reported.
Local authorities reiterated their support for the families and urged the population to follow official channels for further updates regarding the case, while verification efforts are ongoing.
Although it has been ruled out that these cases are directly related to Hurricane Melissa, the heavy rainfall recorded in recent days may have contributed to the rise of the river and the difficult ground conditions in the eastern part of the country.
On social media, family members and neighbors have urged to avoid rumors and to act prudently while rescue operations are ongoing.
