Hurricane Melissa is about to make landfall in eastern Cuba, very close to the Uvero–Chivirico area in Santiago de Cuba, with sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour, according to the latest report from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued at 2:00 a.m. Cuban time.
The powerful system, classified as a category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, is moving northeast at 17 kilometers per hour, heading toward the provinces of Holguín and Las Tunas, where it is expected to continue causing torrential rains, storm surges, and strong wind gusts over the coming hours.
The NHC warns that Melissa maintains a very compact and intense structure, with a central pressure of 952 millibars, and could cause flash flooding and landslides in mountainous areas.
The provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Granma, Holguín, and Las Tunas remain under hurricane alert, while Camagüey is under tropical storm warning.
Authorities emphasize the importance of staying in shelters and remaining informed through official announcements and emergency channels.
