A Cuban identified as @grey.33__ shared a video on TikTok that has moved thousands of people, showing how Hurricane Melissa reduced her mother's house in Contramaestre, Santiago de Cuba, to rubble. “And this is how my mother's house ended up… what a pain, my God,” she wrote alongside the images that quickly went viral.
The video shows fallen walls, broken furniture, and a completely destroyed ceiling. Among the rubble, personal belongings stand out and a children's blanket is covered in cement. The scene encapsulates the harsh reality faced by hundreds of families in eastern Cuba after the passage of the strongest hurricane of the year.
Grey explained in the comments that his mother is alive and out of danger, although she lost everything she had. “Thank God she’s okay, but this still hurts,” he responded to a concerned user. In another message, he shared that he lives in Miami and that he will do everything possible to help her rebuild her home: “It’s not easy to see this from afar.”
The young woman also recalled another painful episode from her life: “This is my second greatest pain after leaving Cuba. A year after being here, the building where my three children were in Havana collapsed… thank God they came out alive, and now this.”
The networks were flooded with messages of support and solidarity for Grey. "Only Cubans know the sacrifice it takes to have everything in our homes," commented one user, while others sent him strength and blessings. "The important thing is that your mom is alive; everything else can be recovered," wrote another follower.
Although Grey is grateful that his mother is still alive, her testimony has become a symbol of the pain and strength of Cubans, who once again are trying to rebuild their lives after the hurricane.
