With a witch's hat, a pumpkin in her hands, and a smile that says it all, Amanda Lemus Ortiz celebrated her first Halloween after a year marked by hope, struggle, and the miracle of life.
The story of this little Cuban girl moved thousands both on the island and beyond. Diagnosed with a severe liver disease, Amanda traveled from Cuba to Spain for a liver transplant that restored her chance at a fulfilling childhood. Her case, closely followed by the Cuban community in exile, became a symbol of solidarity and collective hope.
Today, thanks to a successful surgical intervention and ongoing medical treatment, Amanda enjoys a healthy life, as shown in the photos shared by activist Yamilka Laffita, known on social media as Lara Crofs.
"We celebrate with immense gratitude the incredible progress of Amanda," wrote Laffita, who has supported the campaign that enabled her transfer and medical care in Spain from the very beginning.
In her message, the activist expressed gratitude for the effort of the health professionals and the unconditional love of Amanda's parents, who did not hesitate to raise their voices for the well-being of their daughter.
He also recalled the difficult reality of many Cuban children who do not have access to specialized treatments and urged that "the health of our children should not depend on a temporary improvement, but on a lasting solution."
The images of Amanda dressed as a little witch, with the same smile that once seemed impossible, are a reflection of a story that transcended borders. The girl who once arrived in Spain in critical condition now laughs, plays, and celebrates life, reminding us that hope can overcome adversity.
"Because our children deserve to live with the hope of a better future," wrote Laffita. And Amanda, with her smile, seems to say that future has already begun.
