Laura María Gil, daughter of the former Cuban minister Alejandro Gil Fernández, explained her public silence in recent months and defended her father, accused of espionage and other serious crimes, in the first of three statements posted on her Facebook profile.

"If I have not spoken out about this before, it is due to my strong commitment, just like the rest of the family, to protect the image of our country and to avoid at all costs any popular discontent or an international conflict," wrote the young woman, invoking Articles 54 and 48 of the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, which recognize the right to freedom of expression and to the defense of honor.

In her message, Laura María Gil expressed her "deep dismay at the recent events" and stated that she has respected "the due process that has been followed at all times" and has collaborated "efficiently throughout the investigative process." Although she said she has no intention of altering "the course of events," the daughter of the former minister thanked those who have supported her and called for greater transparency regarding the accusations against her father.

"I am pleased to know that the Cuban government has implemented the Transparency and Access to Public Information Law so efficiently (...), but I believe there are small loose details that have fostered public speculation," he noted. "I believe, just like all Cubans, that there should be complete transparency and that the people must be given full information."

Claim for transparency

In the text, Laura María directly addresses the crime of espionage, the most serious charge against the former minister, and requests a more detailed explanation of the alleged events.

"I appreciate that you mentioned it, as it has been the cornerstone of this investigation, but I believe the public would be much more grateful for an expansion of the news," he wrote before listing a series of questions: "What did he do? Which country or countries are we referring to? Since when? What did he receive in exchange? Who did he meet with? What information was revealed? Under whose direct orders was he acting?"

The daughter of the former Minister of Economy and Planning asserts that the official version has left gaps that foster social uncertainty. Her position aligns with the tone of her previous messages, where she has called for a trial “behind open doors”, broadcast live on national television and Cubavisión Internacional, with participation from both official and unofficial media.

A defense from within the system

Far from breaking with the official narrative, the daughter of the former minister combines legal and patriotic language with an implicit critique of the state's handling of information. Her appeal to the Constitution and transparency suggests an attempt to challenge the official narrative without directly questioning the government.

“I sincerely thank from the bottom of my heart those who have stood firm and expressed their support and solidarity during such a difficult time,” she wrote, distancing herself from any open confrontation while reaffirming the need for “complete information for the people”.

The case of Alejandro Gil, dismissed in February 2024 and accused of crimes including espionage, embezzlement, bribery, money laundering, and document forgery, has highlighted the tensions between the narrative of "zero impunity" promoted by the Communist Party and the opaque handling of judicial processes against high-ranking officials.
