The Attorney General of the Republic announced this Friday that brought public legal action against Alejandro Miguel Gil Fernández —who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Planning— and other accused individuals, following the conclusion of the criminal investigation conducted by the Ministry of the Interior.
The actions against the former Vice Prime Minister and former Minister of Economy and Planning were submitted to the appropriate court, and custodial sanctions “in accordance with the acts committed” were requested.
According to the information note released on October 31, 2025, the Prosecutor's Office controlled the investigation "in accordance with the provisions of Article 156 of the Constitution" and assured that due process was guaranteed during the investigative actions.
The Public Ministry specified that the request for criminal liability includes a wide range of offenses: espionage; acts detrimental to economic activity or contracting; embezzlement; bribery; forgery of public documents; tax evasion; influence peddling; money laundering; violation of the regulations for protecting classified documents; and theft and damage of documents or other items in official custody.
"Responsibility was requested for the crimes of espionage, acts detrimental to economic activity or contracting, misappropriation, bribery, forgery of public documents, tax evasion, influence peddling, money laundering, violation of classified document protection regulations, and theft and damage of documents or other items under official custody," states the Prosecutor's Office.
The official communication did not provide additional details about the progress of the judicial proceedings beyond the presentation of the actions and the request for prison sentences for all those charged.
The Prosecutor's Office emphasized that its intervention is made “on behalf of the State”, in line with its constitutional mandate.
With this notification, the case of Gil Fernández formally advances to the court instance, and is pending the subsequent actions determined by the competent authority.
The Gil Scandal
In March 2024, the Cuban government announced the opening of an investigative file in the Prosecutor's Office for "serious errors" against Alejandro Gil Fernández, who was dismissed a month earlier.
Without providing further details, the regime announced that Gil acknowledged "serious charges" and for that reason resigned from his position as a party member and as a deputy in the National Assembly.
The information added that the Party and the government would never allow corruption, pretense, and insensitivity, and that the more trust was placed in an individual, "the greater the rigor and intolerance with which they would act."
The regime discarded Gil after a disastrous year for the Island's economy, during which Cubans suffered from shortages of food and fuel, power outages, and a deterioration of healthcare services.
It was he who, in December 2023, had to announce in Parliament that the planned levels for 2023 would not be achieved in several food categories, and that even some of them were seeing decreased production levels compared to 2022.
Even during the Plenary of the Central Committee of the Party, Gil acknowledged the failure of the so-called Ordering Task, claiming that it was ineffective and did not achieve the intended objectives.
