In the midst of the devastation left by Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba, a group of barbers decided to turn their craft into a gesture of humanity. From the municipality of Río Cauto in Granma province, the stylists came together to offer free haircuts to the evacuees who remain at the Rubén Bravo Álvarez Pedagogical School.
“Today, the barbershop takes on a new meaning,” stated the organizers of the initiative on social media. “Every snip of the scissors, every smile that appears, is a gesture of love and respect for those facing difficult times.”
The act of solidarity has been received with enthusiasm by those affected, who not only appreciate the service but also the human closeness amidst their loss. “These barbers have restored a bit of dignity and hope to those who have lost almost everything,” commented one of the evacuees.
But this wave of solidarity is not limited to Granma. Across the country, citizens and independent groups have launched campaigns to donate clothing, food, medicine, and construction materials to the communities hardest hit by the cyclone. Churches, religious collectives, and civil associations have turned their temples and facilities into collection centers, often acting without support or coordination from the State, but with a strong community commitment.
In turn, the Cuban diaspora has responded with an unprecedented mobilization. From Miami, Madrid, and other cities around the world, Cubans have raised tons of humanitarian aid and funds to be sent directly to the most affected areas, striving to ensure that the support truly reaches those in need and does not get lost in the regime's bureaucratic channels. A network of solidarity that once again demonstrates that the unity of the Cuban people transcends borders and adversities.
