Seventeen individuals injured in the early morning accident this Friday near the National Highway in Cienfuegos were treated at the Gustavo Aldereguía Lima General Hospital; four remain hospitalized —two in serious condition and two critically— while the others were discharged after being deemed not at risk for their lives, according to the latest report.
According to the information provided by the official Channel Caribe, among the confirmed fatalities were Mikenia Valenciana Godínez (36 years old), originally from La Maya (Santiago de Cuba) and residing in Havana, and Dainé Rodríguez Hernández (22 years old), originally from Santiago de Cuba.
The accident occurred after 2:00 a.m. when the driver of a Yutong bus serving the Guantánamo–Havana route lost control and veered off the road.
Provincial and municipal authorities immediately activated response and transfer protocols; the injured were taken to hospitals in the province.
Preliminarily, it was reported that there were two fatalities and 18 injured, while the main hospital in Cienfuegos received the majority of the emergency attention.
In the Gustavo Aldereguía Lima, medical teams reported that four patients remain in the multi-purpose intensive care unit —two critically ventilated and two seriously ill with diagnoses such as hip fractures and post-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage—while ten “code green” cases have already been discharged with complete recovery.
Several patients and their families emphasized the promptness of the reception, the examinations (X-rays, ultrasound), and the comprehensive care, expressing gratitude for the work of the ambulance system, the medical staff and the support teams mobilized after the accident.
At the same time, communication with family members is maintained, and arrangements for transfers to their home provinces are coordinated for those who require it.
Local authorities reiterated that the response was "timely and effective" and that they will continue to provide updates as the clinical condition of the hospitalized individuals evolves.
The incident adds to a series of mass accidents on Cuban roads in recent weeks, a phenomenon that specialists and local reports attribute to the decline in road conditions, driver fatigue, and technical deficiencies in state transport.
The ongoing investigation will need to specify the exact causes of the incident in Cienfuegos and any potential responsibilities.
