Six people were injured, one of them seriously, in a traffic accident that occurred this Wednesday near the cemetery in the city of Cárdenas, Matanzas, according to preliminary reports.
The incident occurred around 1:15 p.m., when two vehicles collided at one of the intersections surrounding the cemetery of the so-called "Ciudad Bandera," reported on Facebook José Antonio Armás Falcón, cameraman for Telebandera.
According to the information, the collision resulted in five people with minor injuries and one seriously injured, who may suffer from lasting effects due to the accident. So far, the identities of those injured have not been revealed.
The incident involved a truck and a van from the Palmares S.A. Extrahotelera Company, which was devastated by the forceful impact it sustained.
Presumably, the truck driver did not heed the stop sign located at the intersection of the cemetery and the bypass, and collided with the van. "Right of way is vital," Armas warned in his post.
In profiles that replicated the post, residents of Cárdenas alerted about the poor signage at that intersection, which is heavily trafficked, as one of the roads - Vía Blanca - connects Cárdenas with the resort town of Varadero.
Several users agreed that it is necessary to install a traffic light and more warning signs there, as numerous collisions have occurred at that location.
Traffic accidents continue to be one of the leading causes of deaths and serious injuries in Cuba.
From January to August of this year, 502 people lost their lives in traffic accidents. This figure represents 80% of the fatalities from that cause in all of 2024, indicating an increase in mortality from traffic incidents.
The National Road Safety Commission warned in its latest report that victims were reported in seven out of ten incidents that occurred during that period, mainly due to the collision between vehicles, which remains the "most dangerous" accident, accounting for 36% of all fatalities.
The most critical situations have been reported in the provinces of Villa Clara, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, and Artemisa. During the first eight months of 2025, accidents in those areas increased by more than a third compared to the previous year.
