A video shared on TikTok by the user Eili (@lacuki65) went viral as it showcased an emotional family reunion in Puerto Padre, Las Tunas, though what ultimately drew attention was not the hugs, but rather a pair of white high-heeled shoes.
In the clip, Eili arrives at her family's house after years of separation, wearing a mustard blouse, tight white pants, and impeccable heels. The scene, which was meant to be heartwarming, turned into a national debate: internet users couldn't believe she had walked through dirt and mud in such an outfit. "All I can think about is the white shoes," wrote one user, laughing, while another commented: "Poor pants, breathe, breathe."
Far from staying silent, the protagonist responded with wit and confidence. “And what about my white shoes, darling?” Eili replied, and when another follower told her that she would fall with those high heels, she firmly answered, “Where a stiletto steps, a cheap flip-flop can’t walk anymore.” Later, while reading criticisms about her outfit, she added, “It’s not one size down; it’s just that the package is big.” Her spontaneous responses, all delivered with good humor, earned her applause from many.
Despite the jokes and some malicious comments, most users celebrated her style and attitude. “That is the elegance that has been lost,” wrote a follower. Another commented, “Everyone dresses as they please, have you not seen Balenciaga's clothing?” There were also messages of tenderness and empathy: “Only those who have been far away know what that hug means,” “damn distance,” and “that moment resets life.”
Eili's own husband also left his message on the post: “Goal accomplished, my love. Even though we couldn't go together, I felt the joy seeing you hug my mother-in-law and brother-in-law; soon we will fulfill the rest of our dreams.”
At the end of the day, beyond the shoes, the video became a symbol of what thousands of Cubans experience as they long to reunite with their loved ones. And as Eili showed, when you return home, you can walk on any surface, even in white heels.
